Mirabai Chanu clinches India’s 1st gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2022, shatters Games record for women’s weightlifting.

Mirabai Chanu, one of India’s top gold medalists in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022, won the women’s final weightlifting event of 49kg.

Mirabai Chanu set a personal record and a CWG record in weightlifting for women.

She has surpassed our expectations after securing the nation’s first gold medal in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 in the final of women’s weightlifting at 49kg.

Chanu was the winner of the gold medal in Gold Coast four years earlier at the Gold Coast, not only held her title with aplomb by lifting an impressive 201kgs (88kg in the snatch and 113kg for Clean and Jerk); however, she also set the new Games record in the process.

Chanu earned third gold medal of the day, the weightlifting trio following Sanket Sargar had won silver, and Gururaja’s Poojary claimed bronze in the individual events.

How dominant Chanu’s performance could be judged by the difference between her and Silver champion Marie Ranaivosoa of Mauritius; the gap was massive 29kgs.

It took some time for Chanu’s turn, but you knew she would be coming next when the supported staff added weights to the barbells. On the first attempt, Chanu lifted 84kg and a lead of 8kg over the next best.

The next time she attempted a snatch, Chanu added four more kgs and lifted 88kgs ease, smashing the top of her record and breaking the CWG record. As she entered CWG, the biggest excitement surrounding Chanu was whether she’d be capable of lifting 90kgs. Chanu decided to try the feat, but she couldn’t pull it off.
